City Street Department Welcomes Spring with Striping, Asphalt Repairs

Warm temperatures and sunshine aren’t today’s only sure signs of spring. The City of Spokane’s Street Department crews today repainted street striping on Spokane Falls Boulevard in downtown—the first street painting work of the season.

Each year, the City repaints lane lines, crosswalks, and other street markings. Warm, dry weather is needed so the paint can adhere to the streets.

Also for the first time this year, City crews today began using “hot mix” asphalt for street repairs. During the winter months, the community’s asphalt plants shut down and only “cold mix” asphalt, which is limited in its use, is available.

“We’re excited to begin our regular spring street maintenance work,” says Mark Serbousek, the City’s Street Director. “As our residents clear out yard debris and prepare for planting, the Street Department is beginning its annual work of filling potholes, repainting street markings, and sweeping up debris.”

The Street Department asks that motorists slow down around City Street crews and drive carefully around areas that have been coned off for street work. Motorists should not cross wet paint lines; the paint used is difficult to remove from automotive paint finishes.
